Give to Wits

In Africa, there is an urgent need to improve heath services by expanding the base of research scientists (at both Masters and PHD level) with vital skills and qualities necessary to respond to key public health challenges such as HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.

There is also a great demand from African students for public health training in South Africa as more than half of African countries make no provision for such training. Nearly half of our postgraduate students are from outside of South Africa and international agencies have guaranteed bursaries for students who undertake postgraduate qualifications with the School.

Research
The School of Public Health has an excellent track record and is internationally renowned for its research, frequently undertaken in partnership with local and international institutions. Its research aims to improve health systems and inform health, social and development policy. The School is home to two Medical Research Council recognised research units and is also a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre in Urban Health.

In order to maintain its extensive local impact and
its comprehensive pan - African network, the School
is in need of additional facilities, including new computer laboratories with the appropriate ICT equipment.

New Building
A new building for the School will enable it to expand its research programmes in one common facility and to provide the essential infrastructure to support research. It will provide an environment that offers the physical space for intellectual engagement, accommodate visiting Faculty members, increase the School’s interaction amongst its public sector partners and provide a space for intellectual engagement on key public health issues. It will also reflect the growing status of this vital field of study.

Wits University has earmarked an area of land for development for this purpose in Parktown, Johannesburg.
